First things first.  The Nook feels good in my hand.  Not too heavy. It feels nice.

Attaching it to the mac and transferring files back and forth was easy.  Nothing complicated. The Nook shows up as yet another drive.  I have read there is lack of folder support, which might be an issue as more and more books are loaded up.  Maybe this will be addressed.

Navigation takes a little getting used to.  I don’t know all the shortcuts and such yet.  More cumbersome than a real book.  You just cant beat flipping pages.  The way y mind works is it is always scanning as I am flipping pages.  Its might catch something as the pages fly by.  The nook has a pause before flipping pages so it is not as crisp.

The e-ink is very crisp and easy to read.  Its weird having an electronic device with no backlit display.  I keep waiting for the screen to light up when I wake up the device.  Kind of eerie actually.

The glaring problem I have right now is there is no zoom feature when reading PDF files.  As I mentioned earlier PDF files are the main things I want to read.  The problem is the PDF files have to have their text at such a small level to display properly.  This makes the PDF look the way it should but makes the text very small to read.  Many of the PDF files I read are of a technical nature.  They have diagrams and figures which support the text.  If I make the text big enough to easily read the diagrams and such go away. This issue can’t be totally blamed on the Nook.  Other e-readers have this issue as well.  The PDF files were never designed to be on such a small screen.  I have heard epub and the Amazon format solves this.  I am going to download the Kindle app for the iPhone and buy a cheap o’reilly book and see if their proprietary format makes a difference.

Right now I am having a little bit of Buyer’s remorse because of the PDF issue.  If there was a way to zoom it might make things better.  Anyone who has PDFs with diagrams and other formatting might be disappointed like I am at this point.

The whole nature of e-books brings up a long term question.  Books are not dependent on standards, companies, or technology  Once you have a book you have it for hundreds of years.  To me this is why e-readers are perfect for technology related publications.  The technology changes so much.  You don’t have to worry about keeping a book on Cisco routers for more than 10 years is almost unheard of.  If the book is lost, expires, is outdated by new technology it’s not that big of a deal.  However, if I purchase “To Kill a Mockingbird “, which is one of my favorite books, I would be worried about having access to that book in 25 years.  Sure I can purchase the physical book somewhere, but that drives up the total cost of ownership (TCO) of the book.  I have bought it twice at this point.
